What 5 Stones Taught Me About Becoming

When most people hear the story of David and Goliath, they picture a boy with a sling defeating a giant. But the real miracle wasn’t just that David defeated Goliath—it’s that he had become the kind of person who could.
In my new book, The 5 Stones of David (available soon), I explore the journey that prepared David for that moment. Along the way, he collects five stones—each not just a weapon, but a lesson.
These same principles can shape us today.
1. Vision — Seeing the Future Before It Arrives
Before David ever stepped onto the battlefield, he had to believe that his life could matter. It was the prophet Samuel who planted that seed of vision in him—calling him to something greater. Vision is what allows us to live for more than survival. It gives our days direction, and our hearts something to grow toward.
2. Courage — Stepping Forward While Still Afraid
David didn’t wait for fear to disappear. He moved through it. Courage isn’t about confidence—it’s about conviction. It’s the whisper that says, Even if I fail, I will not freeze. We find courage not only on battlefields, but in daily moments of choice: to speak, to try, to trust.
3. Preparation — Honoring the Hidden Work
David’s victory over Goliath wasn’t spontaneous. It was the result of years of tending sheep, practicing with a sling, and growing in skill. Preparation is what we do when no one is watching. It’s the habits, disciplines, and small acts of excellence that build a foundation for greatness.
4. Perseverance — Staying the Course When the Path is Long
Before he ever met Goliath, David endured trials that could’ve broken him. He was overlooked by family, hunted by wild animals, and questioned by kings. Perseverance is the quiet, stubborn refusal to give up. It’s what keeps us walking when the road turns uphill.
5. Faith — Trusting What You Cannot See
At the heart of it all, David trusted that God was with him. Not because he felt invincible, but because he knew he wasn’t alone. Faith bridges the gap between our efforts and the outcomes we can’t control. It gives us the courage to act, even when the results are uncertain.
Why This Story Still Matters
We all face giants. And sometimes, we think we need more time, more strength, more answers. But maybe what we really need… are stones.
The 5 Stones of David is more than a retelling of a Bible story—it’s a roadmap for growth. It reminds us that the giant isn't the point. The journey is.
You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to keep walking, keep gathering, and keep believing.
Your moment is coming.
Pick up your stones.
